Start with the safari you have booked, not a list of camera equipment. A photographer needs to understand where you will be, how you travel and what you want to remember.

Before you request a quote
Send the operator's day-by-day itinerary, accommodation names, party size and dates. Explain whether you want wildlife photographs, pictures of your family, a short film or all three. These choices affect vehicle space and the time spent at a sighting. Ask what happens on transfer days: travelling with the group is still a commitment of crew time.
During the journey
Agree how the photographer and guide communicate. Your guide decides access and safe positioning; a photography brief must work within those decisions. A short portrait session at camp can be more comfortable than repeatedly stopping a game drive. Leave space for unscripted moments instead of expecting every hour to produce a set piece.
Before departure
Get the coverage days, edited outputs, usage, review process and delivery expectations in writing. Ask how travel and production permissions are handled for your itinerary. If the proposal says 'video', clarify whether that means one edited film, several short clips or both. Those are different deliverables.
