Photographing Whale Sharks Around Mafia Island
A photographer's guide to planning an ethical, season-aware wildlife experience, from our Moshi studio: timing, light, gear and shooting responsibly.
Whale sharks gather around Mafia Island for part of the year, and swimming with them is a remarkable experience. Choose a responsible operator, keep your distance, never touch them or use flash, and let the encounter set the pace.
The coast is ruled by tide, wind and a very bright midday sun. Pictures that work here are planned around the sea, not the clock. In the Mafia Archipelago, this guide keeps coming back to four things: seasonal presence, boat briefings, distance and contact rules and uncertainty of wild sightings.
What to capture
- Seasonal presence
- Boat briefings
- Distance and contact rules
- Uncertainty of wild sightings
How to shoot it
Photograph the same shore at different tides. An open lagoon in the morning can be a long stretch of sand by the afternoon.
Work with the light: backlit water early and late, and shade or interiors in the middle of the day.
Film short, steady clips with natural sound. Waves, wind and voices do much of the storytelling.
Show the life along the shore: dhows, fishing, markets and food. The coast is more than an empty beach.
Light and timing
Sunrise suits the east coast and sunset the west, which is worth knowing before you choose where to stay. Midday light on white sand is harsh and flattens colour.
Ask your lodge for the tide times on your dates. Low tide on some coasts reveals reefs and pools; on others it empties the beach you were planning to shoot.
Gear and practicalities
Salt and sand get everywhere. Keep equipment in a dry bag on boats, wipe it down every evening and never change a lens on the beach in the wind.
For underwater work, use a proper housing or a camera rated for the depth, and test it in a pool or sink before trusting it with the camera.
A simple shot list
A short list keeps a trip focused without making it feel like work. Adapt it to your own days:
- Establishing: wide frames that show where you are and what the day looks like.
- The main subject: seasonal presence and boat briefings, from more than one distance and angle.
- Context: distance and contact rules, and the people and places around it.
- Details and motion: uncertainty of wild sightings, textures, hands, sound and short clips that bring the stills to life.
- You: at least a few frames with you in them. They are the ones most people wish they had.
Permits, people and responsibility
Keep a respectful distance from dolphins, turtles and other marine life, never touch or stand on coral, and choose boat operators who brief you properly. Ask before photographing people, particularly in conservative coastal towns. Drones need authorisation from the Tanzania Civil Aviation Authority, and many hotels and marine areas have their own rules.
Questions we are often asked
When is the best light on the coast?
Early morning and the last hour before sunset. Which one suits you depends on whether your beach faces east or west.
Do I need an underwater housing?
For anything beyond a quick snorkel, yes. A rated housing or waterproof camera protects the equipment and lets you shoot calmly instead of worrying about leaks.
Can I fly a drone over the beach?
Only with authorisation from the Tanzania Civil Aviation Authority and permission from the property or area you are flying over. Many resorts and marine parks do not allow drones at all.
