Coast & Islands: photography field notes
The coast is ruled by tide, wind and a very bright midday sun. Pictures that work here are planned around the sea, not the clock.
Photograph the same shore at different tides. An open lagoon in the morning can be a long stretch of sand by the afternoon.
Work with the light: backlit water early and late, and shade or interiors in the middle of the day.
Film short, steady clips with natural sound. Waves, wind and voices do much of the storytelling.
Show the life along the shore: dhows, fishing, markets and food. The coast is more than an empty beach.
Light and timing
Sunrise suits the east coast and sunset the west, which is worth knowing before you choose where to stay. Midday light on white sand is harsh and flattens colour.
Ask your lodge for the tide times on your dates. Low tide on some coasts reveals reefs and pools; on others it empties the beach you were planning to shoot.
Equipment and practical preparation
Salt and sand get everywhere. Keep equipment in a dry bag on boats, wipe it down every evening and never change a lens on the beach in the wind.
For underwater work, use a proper housing or a camera rated for the depth, and test it in a pool or sink before trusting it with the camera.
People, access and current requirements
Ask before photographing people, private spaces or sensitive activity, and respect a refusal. Confirm current photography, filming and equipment requirements with the location operator and relevant authority for your actual assignment. Personal visits, commercial production and aerial work may need different arrangements.
