Where to Stay in Moshi: A Local Studio's Guide for Kilimanjaro and Marathon Trips
A photographer's guide to matching accommodation to an active itinerary, from our Moshi studio: timing, light, gear and shooting responsibly.
Moshi is our home, and it is the natural base for Kilimanjaro climbs, the marathon and day trips to waterfalls and hot springs. Clear mornings give views of Kilimanjaro above the town, so a room or rooftop facing the mountain is worth asking for.
Where you stay decides where you can be at sunrise and sunset. For a photographer, location beats star rating, and a view from the room can be worth a whole extra day. In Moshi, this guide keeps coming back to four things: gear storage, early breakfast, race or trek transfers and quiet recovery rooms.
What to look for
- Gear storage
- Early breakfast
- Race or trek transfers
- Quiet recovery rooms
Light and timing
Rooms have one or two good hours. East-facing spaces photograph best in the morning, west-facing ones in the afternoon, and interiors that never see direct sun can be shot through the middle of the day.
Ask about power hours before you arrive. Some camps run generators for part of the day, which decides when you can charge batteries and back up files.
Gear and practicalities
A wide lens for rooms and views, a short telephoto for details, and a small tripod for interiors and low light. Pack a power bank and a multi-socket adapter.
In tented camps, keep equipment zipped away from dust and insects, and do not leave it on a veranda overnight.
A simple shot list
A short list keeps a trip focused without making it feel like work. Adapt it to your own days:
- Arrival: the first views, the journey in and the moment the trip starts to feel real.
- The main event: whatever the trip is built around, from more than one distance and angle.
- Context: the places you stay, the people you travel with and the roads in between.
- Details and motion: textures, food, hands, sound and short clips that bring the stills to life.
- You: at least a few frames with you in them. They are the ones most people wish they had.
Permits, people and responsibility
Guests and staff should only appear in pictures with their consent. If you are photographing a property commercially, agree in writing what will be shot, who appears, and how the pictures may be used, before the shoot day.
Questions we are often asked
What makes a lodge good for photography?
Location first: short drives to the best areas and a view that works at sunrise or sunset. After that, charging facilities, early breakfast and flexible meal times help a lot.
Can I photograph other guests?
Not without asking. Keep other guests out of frame unless they are happy to be included.
How should a property prepare for a professional shoot?
Decide what the pictures are for, give the rooms a full service reset, plan around the light rather than the diary, and agree the deliverables in writing beforehand.
