What to Pack for the Kilimanjaro Marathon, Camera Included
A photographer's guide to separating race essentials from safari or beach luggage, from our Moshi studio: timing, light, gear and shooting responsibly.
Packing for the marathon means separating race kit from camera kit. Keep the camera small, bring spare batteries, and plan who will carry what on race day so runners are not weighed down.
A race day happens once. The pictures that matter — the start, the struggle, the finish, the people waiting — need a plan made before the gun goes. In Moshi, this guide keeps coming back to four things: race shoes in hand luggage, sun protection, hydration plan and post-race layers.
What to plan for
- Race shoes in hand luggage
- Sun protection
- Hydration plan
- Post-race layers
Light and timing
Races start early and the light changes fast. Morning light near Kilimanjaro is soft and clear, and the mountain is most likely to be visible then, before cloud builds.
By late morning the sun is high and harsh. Use shade, backlight and closer framing rather than fighting it.
Gear and practicalities
A zoom that covers wide to medium telephoto lets you work from one spot. Use a fast shutter speed for runners and keep a spare card and battery in your pocket, not your bag.
Crowds make big bags awkward. Carry a small kit and plan a meeting point with your runner in case phones fail.
A simple shot list
A short list keeps a trip focused without making it feel like work. Adapt it to your own days:
- Arrival: the first views, the journey in and the moment the trip starts to feel real.
- The main event: whatever the trip is built around, from more than one distance and angle.
- Context: the places you stay, the people you travel with and the roads in between.
- Details and motion: textures, food, hands, sound and short clips that bring the stills to life.
- You: at least a few frames with you in them. They are the ones most people wish they had.
Permits, people and responsibility
Stay out of the course and away from marshals' working areas, and follow the organiser's rules on photography zones. Ask before photographing children or supporters close up. Drones need authorisation from the Tanzania Civil Aviation Authority and the organiser, and are rarely allowed over crowds.
Questions we are often asked
Where is the best place to photograph runners?
It depends on the current route, which can change between editions. Check the official course map, then choose one or two points you can reach calmly rather than chasing every kilometre.
Can I film my runner crossing the finish line?
Usually from the spectator areas, yes. Arrive early for a good position, because the finish fills up quickly.
Should I hire a photographer for the race?
If you are running, you cannot photograph yourself, and supporters often miss moments while cheering. A photographer who knows where to stand gives your group pictures you would not get otherwise.
