Getting Around Tanzania with Camera Gear: Flights, Roads and Ferries

A photographer's guide to choosing transport that fits time, comfort and budget, from our Moshi studio: timing, light, gear and shooting responsibly.

How you move around Tanzania shapes what gear you can carry. Small planes have strict weight limits and usually want soft bags; long road transfers mean dust and vibration; ferries mean spray and salt. Pack for the hardest leg of the journey.

Good travel pictures are mostly a planning problem. Enough time in the right place at the right hour matters more than the camera you bring. Anywhere in Tanzania, this guide keeps coming back to four things: domestic aviation, long-distance roads, Zanzibar ferries and private and shared transfers.

What to think through

  • Domestic aviation
  • Long-distance roads
  • Zanzibar ferries
  • Private and shared transfers

Light and timing

Build the itinerary around mornings and late afternoons. Long transfers belong in the middle of the day, when the light is worst anyway.

Avoid scheduling your most important location on an arrival or departure day. Delays happen, and a missed hour of good light rarely comes back on the same trip.

Gear and practicalities

Pack for three environments: dust on safari, cold on the mountains and salt by the sea. Dry bags, lens cloths and spare batteries matter more than an extra lens.

Back up every evening to two separate places. Connectivity outside towns can be slow, so do not count on uploading large files until you reach a strong connection.

A simple shot list

A short list keeps a trip focused without making it feel like work. Adapt it to your own days:

  • Arrival: the first views, the journey in and the moment the trip starts to feel real.
  • The main event: whatever the trip is built around, from more than one distance and angle.
  • Context: the places you stay, the people you travel with and the roads in between.
  • Details and motion: textures, food, hands, sound and short clips that bring the stills to life.
  • You: at least a few frames with you in them. They are the ones most people wish they had.

Permits, people and responsibility

Personal photography is normally covered by park and site entry. Commercial filming usually needs its own permit and fee, and drones need authorisation from the Tanzania Civil Aviation Authority plus the landowner or park. Tanzania bans plastic carrier bags, so pack equipment in fabric bags or dry bags rather than disposable plastic.

Questions we are often asked

How far ahead should I plan a photography trip?
As soon as your dates are fixed, especially for peak seasons, when well-placed lodges fill first. The locations you want for light should be booked before anything else.

Should I hire a photographer or bring my own camera?
Many travellers do both. Bring your own camera for the moments only you will see, and bring in a professional for the days that matter most, so you can be in the pictures and enjoy them.

What changes most often?
Entry rules, park fees, flight schedules and permit requirements. Check them again close to departure against official sources.
