Photographing a Multigenerational Family Safari
A family safari involving several generations needs a portrait plan that respects different energy levels. Essential group pictures should be easy to complete, with time left for the journey itself.

Make the family list first
Identify the whole-group portrait and smaller combinations, including grandparents with grandchildren and individual households. Tell the photographer how names are pronounced and any relationships that need sensitive handling. A written list prevents someone being overlooked while everyone assumes the photograph has already happened.
Design for comfort
Choose a location with seating, level access and shade where possible. Avoid moving the entire group repeatedly. Photograph the combinations involving people who need the shortest session first. Coordinate any location restrictions with the lodge and guide rather than improvising outside a vehicle.
Record more than the formal portrait
Meals, conversations, shared reactions and small gestures can tell the family story. Ask for these moments alongside the group list. Agree who receives the files, who may print them and which images should stay out of public portfolios.
